Trauma: How It Impacts the Mind and Body
Trauma isn’t just “something bad that happened a long time ago.” It’s what happens inside of us as a result of overwhelming experiences that our mind and body weren’t fully able to process at the time. When life throws us events that are too big, too fast, or too much for our system, those experiences can leave lasting imprints on how we think, feel, and physically respond to the world.
Trauma & The Body
Trauma isn’t “all in your head.” It also lives in the body. Stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol can stay on high alert long after the danger has passed. Your nervous system holds onto the memory, which might look like:
In short: your body remembers, even when your mind wants to forget.
The Good News
While trauma can feel like it takes over everything, healing is absolutely possible. Therapy approaches like Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, and Trauma-Focused CBT work with both the mind and body to gently release stuck survival responses.
The goal isn’t to erase what happened (no magic erasers, unfortunately) but to help your system learn that it is safe now. With support, you can regain a sense of calm, connection, and resilience.
